Power Flushing from your Local Plumbers
Over time some heating systems may experience poor circulation resulting in lukewarm radiators, poor hot water, increased noise and/or sludge build up. Even with a MagneticFfilter installed (although these will catch most debris), sometimes this is not enough to trap everything as there are also non-magnetic particals of debris which can clog up your system and this can only be cleared with a Power Flush.
Have you felt your radiators and noticed that they are cold at the bottom and hot at the top? This usually means that you have ‘sludge’ in your radiators and heating system.
As well as slowing down the circulation of heat, sludge will make your system far less efficient and can shorten the life of your boiler because as the water in the system passes through the Heat Exchanger, it can leave small deposits and as these build, they can block the Heat Exchanger which will need to be cleaned. If the damage is too bad it will need to be replaced, however sometimes this is not possible and will require a replacement boiler. Either way, you will need to have your system flushed and protected with Inhibitor to keep the system clean.
When we Power Flush your system, we will flush it one radiator at a time. As each radiator is cleaned the power flushing machine forces water around the inside which mixes with what is currently inside the radiator and pulls dirt out. It creates a swirl of water and keeps going until the water is running clean. We then alter the direction of the swirl of water, which forces any dirt and debris which has gone into the corners out and again we flush until the water runs clean again.
All of the debris is collected through two strong magnets to prevent it from re-entering the system, this also increases the level of collection.
Once we are happy that your system is as clean as it can be, we will then add a good quality Inhibitor (a substance which slows down or prevents the build-up of dirt and debris in the central heating system) to protect your system, although we would advise that this be re-treated after the first two years to keep the system fully protected.
The Inhibitor should also be topped up if you need to partially drain the system for instance when removing a radiator or after a leak in the system.
Manufacturers will usually check your system to see if it has sludge in it, and if it does, they will not carry out the work under warranty often instructing you to have a Power Flush and then call them again. But in cold weather this can take a while and in the meantime you may not have any heating.
Just a brief note to thank you (or more specifically Carl) for very efficiently power flushing the system at the above address. My wife and I are very pleased with the way the job was done, including making the arrangements, and would certainly recommend you to others for similar work.Anon
The cost of ‘power flushing’ from us is £250.00 plus VAT for a 6 radiator system and £20 plus VAT per radiator after that. (Please note that power flushing will not remove blockages) depending on the type of system you own.

Looking at it another way, the first picture is some water I took from our flushing machine after a powerflush – the systems wasn’t overly dirty and you can see there doesn’t appear to be much sludge at the bottom:
The second picture is the same water in a jar, but after it’s been shaken – as you can see, what doesn’t appear to be very much sludge thoroughly mixes with the water when it’s moving around your system.
If you would like us to clean your system and add Inhibitors to protect your system for the next couple of years, please give us a call on 01323 840 569.
